THE ANTIOXIDANT CLUB is a health initiative focused on preventive medicine and body function optimisation.

As such, we combine Personalised Nutrition through Genetic Testing with expert knowledge about the physical, physiological and psychological challenges of living in an increasingly toxic environment (Homotoxicology) to create individualised health protocols aimed at optimum health.

Why choose Personalised Nutrition to improve your health?

Therapeutic interventions using diet are very effective in improving wellbeing on a daily basis and preventing chronic disease. Your neurotransmitters, hormones and all the molecules in your body are made from the food you eat, digest and absorb.

PERSONALISED NUTRITION is the foundation for Optimal Health and an important aspect of Preventive Medicine.

Personalised Nutrition looks at the individual’s unique nutritional needs and disease susceptibility that can be assessed through taking a full medical history and looking for clinical patterns and clusters of symptoms that are indicative of metabolic imbalances or nutrient deficiencies.

For instance, the “good mood” neurotransmitter serotonin is made from the amino-acid tryptophan with the help of mineral & vitamin co-factors: vitamin B6vitamin Cfolic acid and magnesium. If you’re deficient in any of these nutrients, your body won’t effectively convert tryptophan to serotonin and this will show up in symptoms of mild depression, sleep problems, anxiety and a generalised state of unhappiness.

Similarly, the neurotransmitter dopamine that boosts drive, concentration & motivation, is made from the amino-acid tyrosine with the help of certain mineral & vitamin co-factors. Your thyroid hormones are also made from tyrosine, with the addition of iodine and other co-factors. If you’re deficienct in these nutrients, you can experience a lack of zest for life and you’ll often rely on caffeine, sugar or other stimulants to get through the day.

Also, the health of your intestinal flora impacts your production of neurotransmitters. An overabundance of bad bacteria leaves toxic byproducts called lipopolysaccharides which lower levels of dopamine. The same thing will happen when you have a toxic liver, heavy metal exposure, high toxic load in general, or you’re under a lot of stress.

Beyond strict biochemistry, food was also found to modify human genetic expression, in other words nutrients can turn genes on or off. And if we’re talking disease-causing genes, we certainly want them off.

GENETIC TESTING: To further fine-tune your therapeutic intervention, you can benefit from a personalised health programme with specific dietary, exercise & lifestyle advice based on your unique genetic profile.

To continue the example of neurotransmitter synthesis that is crucial for your mood, this is how a genetic test can throw light on what’s happening: neurotransmitters are made through methylation, a process that is dependent on the MTHFR gene and more than two thirds of the population have a mutation in this gene, which leads to impaired neurotransmitter synthesis. However, there are ways to optimise this pathway and people with a certain MTHFR genotype require more nutritional support.

There are many other ways in which a genetic test can inform your health strategy. I currently collaborate with the Canadian company NUTRIGENOMIX whose 45 Gene Test analyses 45 genetic markers that are crucial for:

  • Nutrient Metabolism (you will find out your individual dietary needs for Vitamin A, B12, C, D, E , Folate, Iron and Calcium)
  • Cardio-Metabolic Health (you will find out how caffeine, sodium, omega-3 fat, saturated fat affect your heart health)
  • Weight Management (you will find out the ideal ratio of macronutrients that supports your weight loss)
  • Food Intolerances (you will find out if you have the genes responsible for gluten and lactose intolerance)
  • Eating Habits
  • Physical Activity
  • Injury Risk

genova-diagnostics-imageTo find out the root cause of a health problem, laboratory tests may be needed. Conventional lab tests are limited to analysing only one or two markers but this can only diagnose a very advanced condition.

Also, if test values fall within the “normal range”, your doctor will most likely tell you that your health problem is all in your head and that you’re “perfectly healthy”, despite displaying troubling symptoms. This is because the “normal ranges” are very wide and what might be normal for some people might not be normal for you.

We don’t jump from good health to bad health overnight, there is a long period in between those states when we experience all sorts of diffuse health issues. This is where comprehensive laboratory test are very helpful since they analyse all the markers involved in a specific condition. Taking hypothyroidism as an example, your doctor will only look at your TSH and serum antibody levels but this information is very limiting if not misleading. A comprehensive laboratory thyroid test analyses serum levels of TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, anti-TG antibodies and anti-TPO antibodies to assess central and peripheral thyroid function as well as thyroid auto-immunity.

We collaborate with GENOVA DIAGNOSTICS for comprehensive and innovative clinical laboratory tests for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex chronic disease. Genova Diagnostics offers more than 125 specialized diagnostic assessments, covering a wide range of physiological areas.
